Creating Excellence

Since 1982, the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) has helped blaze a path toward a better qualified, better trained and more diverse fire service.

As a department utilizing FCTC, the Cal-JAC's resources and experience are at your disposal, as well as that of the candidates.

For the right candidates, FCTC provides effective guidance, mentoring, fair and rigorous screening and, if they qualify, a spot on the statewide list and a chance to get noticed by you.

For you as an employer, FCTC offers a wealth of recruitment tools, a wide-ranging outreach effort and a decades-long commitment to quality and diversity.

  • Becoming A Firefighter: A resource providing candidates with academic and physical requirements, how to prepare for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and the necessary steps to becoming a firefighter.
  • Women's Commission: Cal-JAC continues to pioneer the creation of a broader, more professional and more diverse fire service, through its Commission to Recruit Women for the Fire Service—the first statewide recruitment effort targeting women and minorities in the fire service.
  • Department Resources: Fire departments can access tools to assist with their recruitment efforts.
