During the Christmas holidays, I always find myself wanting to do more than I have time and money whether through donations or volunteering my time. Giving back is very important for me and something I want instilled in my kids. That’s why, when Suzanne Bertani of Mommy Footprint and Green Planet Parties, came up with a fundraiser to help inner city schools of Vancouver, I jumped on board. This idea stemmed from an article in the Vancouver Sun (click here to read) where a teacher inspired a special fundraising project called Adopt-a-School. This project identifies schools and their specific needs throughout Metro Vancouver. This site allows a person, family, organization or group of companies to identify how they can help whether it’s money or donations of products like shin guards, winter coats in particular sizes, mitten, socks, etc. Everyone and anyone can make a difference! The great thing about donating money via Adopt-a-School is that they will match all amounts contributed so the money is doubled for the schools. . . . Read More

Share Your Joy and Wealth this Holiday Season by Sponsoring a Family for Christmas! Each year, for the past 10+ years, our family have sponsored needy families in East Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam for Christmas. We participate in hamper programs offered by each city and we provide gifts, a food hamper and food certificates to get all the trimmings for holiday dinners to families who cannot afford Christmas. This is a cause dear to my heart as my parents were new immigrants to Canada more than 30 years ago and with 6 little kids to feed, all under 9 years, there was no extras for gifts or stockings. . . . Last week, I received a very nice note from a mom who purchased one of our stainless steel water bottles for her 3 years old son. I’ve always loved hearing from customers especially with comments about how their child uses our bottles. The email made my day. A couple of days later, she emailed me again with a little story and a comment stating that she would make my day again. It was so touching that I have to share it because it not only made my day but my entire week! So here it is, unaltered words by the original author. . . . Read More

This is the second year that Fill Your Own has participated in the Backpacks 101 Project with Monique D’Sa in Ontario. The backpacks 101 Project is delighted to have 108 children and teens received new backpacks filled with supplies. For the Fall/Winter, Monique is looking for donations of new adult gloves or mittens or a new or very gently used stuffed animal to be included with blankets that will be given out to the homeless in Toronto. This initiative was the brilliant idea of Ethan, Monique’s son who shares her generosity and charity. . . . Read More

Reduce, reuse, recycle. With things like music, where you listen to songs again and again, it is obvious that not shipping around plastic disks, packaging, wrappers and more lowers the footprint of your purchase. Buying digital wins every time. In the case of books vs. eReaders, the argument is a little more mixed. If you were already going to buy a tablet device, and simply add reading to your use of the device – the equation is easy – each book you buy digitally vs. in paper form is a dramatic reduction in carbon and environmental footprint. . . . I love the Japanese bento lunches. They are all so cute so I couldn’t resist making this healthy litterless lunch. On this final day of creative lunch ideas we’re offering Sushi Friends. The contrast in colours are beautiful yet fun to eat. I’ve also chosen the black and white to show how different we all are in personalities, looks, shapes, ages, preferences for what’s in our lunches and etc, yet we can all still fit inside the same container, this big beautiful world of ours. Get creative. Go nuts! Make your next lunch a fun and healthy litterless lunch. We would love to hear from you and what’s important to you when you make your lunches. We’ll be doing another series of litterless lunches in time for back to school come September. . . . Read More

Tonight, I attended my kid’s Christmas concert/play and it was just fantastic! The theme was around Santa goin’ green and the songs and music were unbelievable. The songs were about turning off lights to help prevent global warming, recycling [fruitcake], the greenhouse effect, clear cutting Christmas trees, installing solar panels on the roof of Santa’s workshop and alternative power supplies for the sleigh. Kids in kindergarten to grade 7 were all involved and the evening was well attended by parents, relatives and friends – I just love that kids so young can think about goin’ green for the holidays and with musical flare! Congrats on a wonderful performance kids!
