Last week, we wrote about the Wonders of Vinegar for Eco-Friendly Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning. Today, we’re adding a bit of baking soda for the Miracles of Vinegar with Baking Soda for Eco-Friendly Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning.
What is Baking Soda?
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a chemical salt used for baking, personal care and health, and cleaning. In baking, baking soda is a leavening agent. In personal care and health, it’s used to deordorize, relieve itching, soothes skin, softens bath water and clean teeth. Baking soda is also used to stabilize acid-alkali balance (pH) and is commonly used for heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and fatigue. Baking soda can also be used for minor grease or electrical fires – when heated, baking soda emits carbon dioxide which helps smother flames. And of course, baking soda can be used for household cleaning which is our focus.
Here are the Miracles of Vinegar with Baking Soda for Eco-Friendly Non-Toxic Spring Cleaning
1. All Purpose Cleaner - mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of baking soda in 2 litres of water in a spray bottle. Use for all types of surface cleaning.
2. Scrubber - sprinkle baking soda to any surface (bathroom, tub, tiles, sinks, oven, microwave, etc) and scrub with a damp cloth. Add vinegar to create bubbling and more powerful scrub for difficult surfaces like rings in toilets or bathtubs.
3. Drain Declugger - pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain and slowly add 1/2 cup of undiluted vinegar. Let sit for 30 minutes and flush with hot water. The clog is gone and so is the smell!
4. Deordorizer - use baking soda and vinegar to clean your garbage cans and compost bins. It sanitizes and refreshes which is especially helpful during hot summer days when garbage and compost is rotting away.
5. Light Rust Remove - mix baking soda and vinegar into a paste and use pot scourer or cloth to remove light rusting.
